Winter Wellness Saturdays

Start your weekend in the beauty of nature

Do you spend most of your winter indoors?

While cold temperatures and shorter daylight hours can tempt us to stay inside, going to nature is a critical and often overlooked component of mental health. Fresh air, natural Vitamin D, and connection to the cycles of nature can help us stay healthy and fight the effects of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).

Join us in the forest on Saturday mornings from 9:15-10:15AM for our new Winter Wellness Saturday classes!

Winter in Michigan is a special experience. Will you join us and embrace it?

Class Format:

Winter Wellness Saturdays include a nature walk, a guided breathwork practice to cleanse your lungs in the forest air, a guided nature immersion through your five senses (also known as a “forest bathing invitation”), and a brief closing opportunity to circle up with community and practice “active listening” for anyone who would like to share about their experience in the forest that day.

What is “active listening?” It means that we are fully listening, knowing that we aren’t expected to analyze what we are hearing or respond in any way. This is something we rarely allow ourselves to do in our normal day-to-day life and can serve us in many ways. Sharing and listening is a common closing activity during guided group forest bathing, and a wonderful way to connect and hold space for each other.

Additional Details:

  • Winter Wellness Saturdays run from 9:15-10:15am. Classes are currently scheduled from November 14 through December 12 (see schedule below for locations and updates). We’ll reconvene after the new year!
  • All are welcome (kids and teens, too!) and no experience in the outdoors is necessary.
  • Class location alternates between Ken-O-Sha Park and Provin Trails, in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
  • STAYING WARM: We’ll have our portable propane heater, Dyna, along for classes. You can hang out with Dyna if you need a little warming up! Dress warm and aim for cozy. We’ve had participants wrap up in blankets, bring a hot thermos of tea or coffee, use hand warmers and more.

The safety of our community is our top priority. We learned on Friday, November 13, that our Program Guide may have been exposed to the COVID-19 virus. Our of extreme caution for our community, we’ve cancelled all classes the weekend of November 14. We will have test results next week to confirm that it is safe for us to resume in-person classes and enjoy time in the forest together. Thank you for your understanding!
